Montford Homes For Sale
Right next door to Downtown is the beautiful neighborhood of Montford. Within easy walking distance to all of downtown's amenities, this neighborhood has long been known to tourists for its charming Victorian Bed & Breakfasts, and tours of its unique and painstakingly restored historic district. Montford is so much more than beautiful old homes. It boasts a tight knit community with beautiful public spaces and thriving community association.
Few neighborhoods reflect the rich architectural heritage of Asheville as well as the Montford Historic District. A portion of this neighborhood was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and in 1981 the Asheville City Council designated Montford as a local historic district. It retains more than 600 buildings, most of which were built between 1890 and 1920, and a variety of architectural influences reflect the cosmopolitan character of Asheville during the turn of the 20th century. Victorian, Queen Anne and Arts and Crafts styles combined with Neoclassical, Colonial Revival and castle-like motifs, result in an overall complex quality of designs and artistic talent throughout the neighborhood.
While most of the development in Montford was single family residential, the neighborhood was dotted with private hospitals. Founded by Dr. Robert S. Carroll, a distinguished psychiatrist, the old Highland Hospital located off the northern end of Montford Avenue was the scene of a deadly fire in 1948. Among the victims was Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Today the hospital features offices and shops, and Dr. Carroll's home, his beautiful Homewood, serves as a wedding and event space. Historic Riverside Cemetery in Montford is the final resting place of a number of famous people including authors Thomas Wolfe and William Sydney Porter (better known as O. Henry), Confederate General Robert B. Vance and North Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance, among others.
Located in the heart of the Montford neighborhood, the city-run Montford Center features a climbing wall and gymnasium. Sign up for one of dozens of clubs, children's summer program or just stop by in the afternoon for pick-up basket ball. The center is surrounded by the Montford Complex which features a playground, tennis court, lighted ball field and an amphitheater.
The Montford Community Association is very active with lots of monthly outreach programs, website and newsletter. The residents of Montford are very concerned about the environment and sustainable living. Their monthly newsletter includes green tips like weeding out non-native invasive plants from your garden, updates from the city's recycling program or the best way to compost your jack-o-lantern. Montford also features a bountiful community garden on Pearson Avenue where residents can learn even more about sustainable gardening practices.
The summers are alive with activity. The Montford Park Players, North Carolina's Longest Running Shakespeare Festival, presents free Theatre in the Park all summer long. Each May the residents of Montford come together for the Montford Music & Art Festival. This unique festival features over 100 vendors of art, crafts, plants and food; two stages with 20 groups performing and a children's area. If running is your passion, the Hot August Night 5K, is a great way to tour the neighborhood.
